Education in Emergencies Challenge,
A MIKTA Endorsed Initiative, Delivered with Australian Aid
“75 million young people are out of school in 35 crisis affected countries and 5 out of every 7 are girls”
What is the Education in Emergencies Challenge?
The challenge is a global call for ideas to begin to source new solutions to the delivery of education in emergency situations, particularly focused on girls.
Who can apply?
We are calling on innovators from across the world – but, particularly from Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia – to submit ideas that have the potential to make a big impact. We welcome submissions from individuals, universities, NGOs, the private sector or any other entity.
Pacific innovators are encouraged to apply.
How to engage
Applicants can submit their innovations until 25 June 2017.
You can also engage in the challenge by reviewing and commenting on other submissions. For more information register at http://ideo.to/cUo8CD
How will Australian Aid support ideas?
AUD $2 million is available for the winning innovations, as well as additional support, such as technical or thematic expertise, to assist successful entrants to develop and implement their ideas. Innovators’ ideas will gain exposure from other prospective donors and investors. In addition, they will have the opportunity to collaborate and network with other challenge participants.
What does “Education in Emergencies” mean and why is this an important problem?
Emergencies have a devastating impact on the structure and effectiveness of education systems in crisis-affected countries. They can trigger closures and disruption to schooling, lead to degraded quality of teaching and cause physical destruction or damage to school infrastructure. Often, in emergencies, children’s education needs are eclipsed by more urgent threats to life such as basic health, sanitation, nutrition requirements and physical security. Girls are disproportionately impacted in these situations.
